Bloodborne pathogens are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans. These diseases include: the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), among others. Examples of “at risk” occupations include: policemen, first aid team members, housekeeping personnel (in some settings), and nurses. OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) protects workers from illnesses contracted from persons with certain bloodborne diseases. |
