Confined spaces are often find in commercial and industrial buildings. A “confined space” is one that is large enough for a worker to enter and perform assigned work, has limited or restricted means for entry or exit (examples include: tanks, vessels, silos, storage bins, hoppers, vaults, and pits), and is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. |
Confined spaces are hazardous locations in proximity to other hazards or locations that increase the possibility of asphyxiation due to lack of oxygen. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates entry into confined spaces under: General Industry Standards (29 CFR 1910), 1910 Subpart J, Occupational Safety and Health Standards, 1910.146, Permit-Required Confined Spaces.
Worker hazards associated with confined spaces include bodily injury, illness and death. OSHA requires evaluating workplace conditions to determine if any work spaces are permit-required confined spaces.
CIH Environmental Solutions experts evaluate existing or suspected confined spaces to determine potential hazards. This site-specific evaluation often results in expert recommendations aimed at reducing the hazard of working in confined spaces by providing engineering controls or other procedures, such as monitoring or personal protective equipment.
