Where hazardous materials are handled in a laboratory setting, it is necessary for an employer to develop and to implement the provisions of a written chemical hygiene plan specially suited to each site. The plan provides protection to employees from health hazards associated with hazardous chemicals in the laboratory |
OSHA has special regulations for protection of workers in the laboratory (29 CFR 1910.1450). The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29CFR 1910.1200) and the National Fire Protection Association Standard (NFPA 45) also apply.
CIH Environmental Solutions assists clients, particularly universities and medical facilities, with developing their Chemical Hygiene Plan. The services also include an assessment of control measures for reducing employee exposures, performing periodic laboratory inspections for the proper functioning and performance of fume hoods, and for the use of personal protective equipment. When needed personal chemical, radioactive or biological exposure monitor is conducted by CIHES experts.
Once the laboratory inspections are conducted and the laboratory hygiene programs are developed, specialized training is conducted in house or in the laboratory itself. This training is provided by experts utilizing digital imaging, audience interaction and hands on tools to effectively achieve workers’ awareness of proper laboratory procedures and safety.
