Noise is unwanted sound. According to OSHA, an estimated 30 million workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels every year. Engine rooms or cooling tower banks are common places were exposure to noise occurs. Health effects caused by elevated noise levels often go unnoticed since there is no pain. Instead, an individual suffers a progressive loss of hearing that can affect their ability to communicate easily with others and respond to their environment. In the United States, noise becomes hazardous once levels exceed 90 decibels over an eight hour workday, and it is therefore regulated by OSHA under regulation 29 CFR 1910.95.
CIH Environmental Solutions provides clients, such as contractors, building owners and managers, with an evaluation of noise exposures. Such assessments may be oriented towards identifying occupational exposure or environmental monitoring as part of municipal code compliance. When applicable, CIH Environmental Solutions also recommends effective engineering controls to attenuate noise and develop a workplace hearing conservation program.
